| Versions: | The Promised Land [Live] | The Promised Land [Studio] | The Promised Land - back room acoustic demo 83 | The Promised Land - single version [Studio] | "'The Promised Land' is a bitter song. It's about Bauhaus, and what went wrong. Funnily enough it has got a few unkind things to say about journalists too.
Is the song an exorcism of the Bauhaus period?
"No, I wrote it while I was still in Bauhaus. I gave an early version of the lyric to Pete to look at, but then I decided that it wasn't quite right, so I took it away to revise it and then the group disbanded, so it was never recorded. The song is about things that happened that were outside our control. It's a condensed biography of Bauhaus, as well as a critique of the music business."
