"'The Promised Land' is a bitter song. It's about Bauhaus, and what went wrong. Funnily enough it has got a few unkind things to say about journalists too.

Is the song an exorcism of the Bauhaus period?

"No, I wrote it while I was still in Bauhaus. I gave an early version of the lyric to Pete to look at, but then I decided that it wasn't quite right, so I took it away to revise it and then the group disbanded, so it was never recorded. The song is about things that happened that were outside our control. It's a condensed biography of Bauhaus, as well as a critique of the music business."
Etiquette and Epithets, ZIGZAG (January,1984)
